It may be the slimmest Digital ELPH Canon has ever created, but the impact couldn’t be bigger. The PowerShot SD780 IS Digital ELPH captivates the senses with bold saturated colors and a daringly original design that matches the intensity of Canon’s most innovative camera technology. It functions perfectly with or without a flash. Canon’s PureColor LCD II offers spectacular color, resolution and contrast even when viewed at an angle. The screen is highly durable and easy to see in any light with a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective coating. It also features Night Display for easy viewing in low light--a perfect feature for gathering friends and family around to see your images. A World of Advantages with Canon’s Technology The DIGIC 4 image processor has evolved Face Detection Technology that tracks the faces of moving subjects and lets the shooter enter the frame seamlessly with the Face Detection Self-Timer. DIGIC 4 Image Processor Canon’s most advanced image processor, DIGIC 4, delivers evolved Face Detection Technology that keeps every face in every photo looking its very best. The technology finds and tracks the faces of moving subjects until you’re ready to shoot, then delivers perfect focus. In addition, exposure, flash and white balance are compensated, so that faces exhibit natural skin tones and backgrounds are properly exposed. iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance. A Face Detection Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces and makes the appropriate adjustments. For instance, to include the photographer’s face in a group shot, there’s no need to rush in. Just put the camera on a stand or tripod, specify Face Detection Self-Timer, and the camera will wait for the photographer’s face to get on-camera before it takes the shot. Motion Detection tracks moving subjects in a much larger range, and the Servo AF retains focus on a moving subject after the shutter button is pressed halfway--allowing you to wait for the perfect shot without refocusing. Intelligent Contrast Correction DIGIC 4 also makes possible the i-Contrast (Intelligent Contrast Correction) system, which controls the compensation level in pixel units to brighten dark areas while leaving bright areas unchanged for better images where the main subject is dark, and more natural transition. The PowerShot SD780 IS Digital ELPH can even use i-Contrast in playback mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting activated. Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures. 1) Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken. 2) The PowerShot SD780 IS Digital ELPH can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback. 3) You can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them. Life doesn’t give you second chances to capture special times. That’s why the PowerShot SD780 IS Digital ELPH features an ISO 1600 setting that reduces the effects of camera shake and sharpens subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility. ISO can be expanded to 3200 when you select ISO 3200 Special Scene mode. Wilkins I just purchased this Canon on a whim, earlier today at Best Buy. I have been tinkering with it for the majority of the evening. My previous SD300 is still working like a champ, however I have been considering a video camera for some time...after some peering at the video camera counter I wandered over to the point and shoot table... what initially drew me in to the SD780IS was its appearance on the display stand. The sleek matte-black body is very eye-pleasing...then I looked at the specs. and realized that it shoots video in HD! (1280x720) Then all the other attributes made me realize that it was time to update my "everywhere, anytime" camera. I proceeded to check out some of the other Canon SD cameras. The SD960 became the other candidate...it has a little more glass(4x)zoom, over the SD780's (3x)zoom. The SD960 has an appealing f2.8 apeture over the SD780's f3.2. The SD960's screen is more tailored for the HD video capture as it has a 16:9 ratio LCD panel. (Kinda nice for instant viewing ON THE CAMERA) After some thought I went with the SD780 for these reasons: 1. The HD video capability is awesome and comparible with the SD960. It has a HDMI jack. The traditional 4:3 screen does not bother me, because the video is ultimately going to be viewed on a HD TV.(There will be an upper and lower bar on 16:9 playback through the SD780's LCD). 2.The weaker 3x zoom is not a big deal as this camera is for general shooting(out w/ freinds, bars, random afternoon at the beach, mountain biking, etc.)and with this camera EASLIY fitting in my jeans pocket or camelbak, the portability is what gives me the opportunity to document those moments, that would otherwise be missed. The SD960 is a little bulkier(but still small). I do also shoot with a Canon 40D, accompanied with L optics, but the weight and bulkiness do not lend to certain shooting circumstances. (as mentined above) 3. The user interface on the SD780IS is like most (if not all?) preceeding SD cameras. While there is not much control in the way of shooting settings, feature buttons like flash override, AE lock, AF lock, and exposure compensation are present on the camera body. The SD960IS has two buttons and a jog wheel, which lend to swims in the menu. I'm sure the new interface on the 960 is intuitive, but I liked the 780 due to its similarity to my old SD300. I am very happy with the results produced thus far with the SD780IS. The HD video is excellant, however it should be known that once recording you can only zoom digitally. Low light cabilities and sound in video mode are excellent. The stills I have taken look great. Also, to the budget-minded who are upgrading from older digital point-and-shoots, a class 4 minimum 4GB or 8GB SDHC card would be well suited due to the demanding memory of the 12.1 million pixels, and HD video. Also, most old card readers will not process the the SDHC cards so you may have to purchase a new card reader as well. I have to mention it again...the small size of the Canon SD780IS is mind-blowing...and the functionality actually mirrors its beauty. 433 of 442 people found the following review helpful. Revolutionary! Beautiful and Powerful By W. Chan OVERVIEW Canon SD780IS is the perfect travel/everyday camera. It weighs a little over 4 ounces. The size of the camera is astonishing. It is smaller than my iPhone 3G and my wallet. I love the new 720p video recording HD feature on the 2009 Canon P+S line. The image stabilization for video/image stills is a winner. The clips are sharper and clearer than the clips from the Creative Vado HD and the Flip Video MinoHD. PLAYBACK ON COMPUTERS For video playback without choppiness on the computer, you need to have at least a Core 2 Duo 1.66 GHz or higher processor on Windows (Vista/XP SP2/XP SP 3) or Core Duo 1.66 GHz or higher processor on Mac OS X (v10.4-v10.5) MEMORY CARD

It does everything a point and shoot digital camera should do and more. For me, a point and shoot camera should be small and light so that it can conveniently go with me everywhere. That's the power of any point and shoot camera actually. It goes with you in your daily life and subsequently you get shots that you could not get with other larger cameras either because it would be too conspicous, or too inconvenient to carry with you. This is the snapshot ethic. I'm a professional photographer and I carry this little pocket camera with me everywhere because I can't carry my pro SLR with me all the time and not have it feel like a burden on my shoulder. You might be tempted to instead buy the cheaper and slightly older Canon SD500 since it has the same megapixel rating and looks very similar. There are however some pretty good improvements in the SD550: -a larger LCD screen (very nice) -better movie mode (SD500 put an annoying hissing/whining sound into the movie) -better battery lid latch design -better internal software (the display actually displays words and symbols such as "continuous mode" "single shot" "Macro" and not just the symbols alone. A NOTE ABOUT CASE COLOR: The SD550 comes in both Silver (called Grey on the box) or Champagne Gold. You will need to inquire with the vendor what color they stock or if you have a choice. Some of the vendors may be a bit useless in this respect so watch out-you may end up receiving a case color that you did not want. In my opinion, the Champagne Gold color is very ugly. Silver is much more attractive, even if you have to go to a local store to buy it. This camera is easy and fun to use and I can even shoot a long movie (up to 20 something minutes at the lower resolution with a 1GB card). Some cameras (Casio) only let you shoot a short 8 second movie. The movie mode is quite usable with quality video and audio. Another cool feature is that the automatic orientation sensor works when you are reviewing images. Try reviewing images and rotating the camera around-the image will always stay right side up on the LCD screen! To conclude, I am happy with this camera because it does everything a small point and shoot digital camera should do, yet it is quite small, light, feels sturdy (metal case) and has very pleasant ergonomics both with regard to the layout of the controls as well as to the on screen menu functions. Color, sharpness and resolution are all impressive for a camera this size. 276 of 284 people found the following review helpful. Best ultra-compact I've seen yet. By Just Say Yo I have owned several digital cameras over the past 3 years. Canon is a brand that never disappoints. This camera is no exception. I have a Canon 20D digital SLR I use with an external flash. I use it almost everyday. Stunning quality, but those of you who have kids know that this is a quite a monster to carry around on a day-to-day basis. I needed something that I could pop into a bag and go without feeling like I was sacrificing quallity. The SD550 is the solution. The Digic II processor enables fast focusing and thereby reduces "shutter lag." Fewer lost moments. Easy menu/function navagation. The flash is amazingly adequate despite it's smallish appearance. Adequate illumination up to 15'. Great in-cam screen. Largest in its class (2.5"). Many custom settings for the novice to the the pro. Movie mode is awesome for a camera of this size. Cons are: You will need to spend an additional 60-90 bucks to get a practical memory card. They supply a 32MB card that is good for about a dozen hi-res pics (or fewer). Still no case included. Coach makes a nice one for about 30 bucks. Conclusion: I know I am an early adopter but I am sure this camera will be a best seller. I hope your results are comparable. 52 of 52 people found the following review

Canon PowerShot S410 4MP Digital Elph with 3x Optical Zoom

Updating the popular S400 Digital Elph, Canon's PowerShot S410 is both elegant and powerful. It features a 4-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, and movie mode for videos of up to three minutes. Elegantly designed and super compact, the S400 has a protective stainless steel shell with a celabrite finish, which mixes metals and ceramics to produce a tough cool-toned exterior that is visually stunning. It also features Canon's new Print/Share button, which helps you quickly connect directly to a printer or send an image via e-mail. Optics and Resolution The 4-megapixel PowerShot S410 can capture 2272 x 1704 images for photo quality 11 x 14 print enlargements. It also has 1600 x 1200, 1024 x 768, and 640 x 480 resolution modes. The 3x optical zoom lens has a focal length of 7.4-22.2mm (35mm equivalent: 36-108mm). It also has a 3.6x digital zoom. Movie Mode The PowerShot S410 features 3-minute QVGA (320 x 240) or QQVGA (160 x 120) movie clips with sound recording, full playback and in-camera cutting and editing. Individual video clips are limited to three minutes in length. Canon's latest, exclusive DIGIC Imaging Processor significantly enhances digital camera performance in numerous areas. DIGIC's high-speed signal processing is combined with high-capacity buffering to give Canon digital cameras fast response and continuous shooting capability unmatched by other digital cameras. DIGIC delivers longer battery life and beautiful, rich color rendition with far fewer white saturation problems. And DIGIC's unequaled precision delivers clear, noise-free images that are demonstrably superior. iSAPS Technology: Canon iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology dramatically improves the performance of AF (Autofocus), AE (Auto Exposure), and AWB (Auto White Balance). By analyzing a huge volume of photography data, accumulated over 60 years and the manufacture of over 150 million cameras, Canon engineers arrived at statistical relationships among focal length, focus distance, scene brightness, and other factors. Equipped with this "fore knowledge" Canon PowerShot cameras can optimize AF/AE/AWB settings for any given scene more rapidly and more effectively. Multi-point AiAF: Canon's wide-area, multi-point AiAF (artificial intelligence autofocus) automatically selects one or more focusing points based on factors, such as subject position and motion. AiAF works in conjunction with iSAPS Technology to more quickly and accurately achieve autofocus under a wide variety of shooting conditions. You get fast, accurate AF whether you hold the camera horizontally or vertically, with stationary or moving subjects, with off-center subjects, and even in low-light/low-contrast lighting. Direct Printing/Sharing The PowerShot S410 introduces a new Print/Share button that speeds and simplifies printing to compatible Canon and PictBridge enabled printers and one-touch image transfer to Windows XP, Me, 2000, and 98 computers for use with image processing programs, uploading to the Internet, or placement in e-mail. When connected to a Canon Compact Photo printer, a Movie Print mode divides the selected clip into equal parts and prints thumbnails of a maximum 63 equally spaced frames onto a single sheet of Postcard Size Paper. Storage and Transfer Images and video are stored on CompactFlash memory cards (Type I only) and the included 32 MB card holds approximately 21 images at the Large/Fine setting. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB 1.1 connectivity, which means the camera can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software. Power and Size The camera is powered by rechargeable lithium-ion battery (NB-1LH). With the LCD on, you will get approximately 190 shots. It measures 3.43 x 2.24 x 1.09 inches and weighs 6.5 ounces (without batteries). Terrific snapshooter, if lacking in manual functions By Andrew Hamada For about 80% of people, this camera is going to be a dream come true.Simply put, it's the pinnacle of ultra compact digital camera technology. With a 4 megapixel resolution with a better sensor than almost all of its competitors in a body the size of a pack of cigarettes, the Canon S410 is fabulous. The buttons and other physical factors of the interface are all well designed: the zoom and shutter button are in the same place for ridiculously easy one handed operation. The function knob on the upper right provides easy access to several shooting & playback modes. Compare this to other recent sexy, ultra-compact powershooters by Casio & Fuji (Think Z4U and A340) and you'll understand why this is a superior camera.Other pros:-Canon STILL uses Compact Flash media, which is significantly cheaper than xD and sD, which a good 90% of other brands use. I have yet to see a downside in everyday use (don't ask me about extreme temperate conditions or whether the various media survive prolonged exposure to electromagnetic fields of varying strengths, as I won't know, and most people don't care).-I personally like Canon's picture quality far better than that of most of its competitors, within the same style of camera.-The auto-focus system is superior to all other cameras of this size and strength. VASTLY superior.Cons:-Canon's movie mode is growing steadily outdated. This is one area where you may be able to find another camera that serves better: This camera is limited to 3 minutes of 15 FPS 320 x 240 resolution motion capture, regardless of the size of your memory card. I do, however, think that if you're that serious about wanting to record digital movies, you should look to a device more aimed at that sort of thing, like the new Panasonic digi-video-cams that take still images as a secondary function.-Memory door is made of plastic, not metal like the rest of the camera, and I have seen it break.-1.5" LCD leaves something to be desired (esp. compared to Casio's line of 2" LCD ultracompacts).-No easy, pre-set scene modes like Fuji or Minolta have.Reasons why you would NOT like this camera:-If this is your first digital camera. I can understand how you may be disappointed by the fact that 99% of point & shoot digital cameras do not make film-quality prints. This is something you will just have to deal with, or not use digital cameras: short of a $700+ SLR digi camera, you will NEVER consistently get film-quality prints, and even then, you will not get the same quality as a comparably priced film camera.-If you are a photo enthusiast. Canon's Digital Elph line of cameras is designed around every day snapshooters that do not need or know how to use things like manual white balance, various aperture settings, add-on lenses, etc. The similarly priced Canon S45 is much more along the lines of what you're looking for, if you insist on remaining in the compact category. Otherwise, invest in a digital SLR camera, as you will be much happier. 220 of 222 people found the following review helpful. A worthy buy By Gadgester The Canon PowerShot S410 is a slightly upgraded version of the immensely popular S400 model, which has been discontinued and can be found for close to three-hundred bux. I think since the S410 is only slightly improved -- it is slightly faster than the S400 and sports a new print/share button which I'm not sure you'll be using a lot if you are the typical user -- the S400 is a much better buy. That said, the S410 will be the new standard bearer for 4MP digital cameras. It has a compact form factor, although not as small or light as offerings from Minolta or Pentax or Casio, and it's a bit heavier than you might have expected from the size. It puzzles me why Canon continues to use the older CompactFlash memory card as opposed to the more-standard Secure Digital format. Maybe

TOP PERFORMER: 4 megapixel camera By Julian Nam This is one of the best point-and-shoot 4 megapixel cameras currently being produced. As with all Canon PowerShot SD series cameras, the SD300 is very easy to use. Canon also makes a 3 megapixel version of this camera (PowerShot SD200) which is about $100 cheaper. What makes this camera DESIRABLE: (1) Takes Great Pictures. This is the most important part of a digital camera, no? The SD300 is quick to focus, is quick to take pictures (very low lag time), takes crisp pictures, and is very easy to use. The SD300 even focuses in the dark thanks to its focus-assist lamp (you can turn this feature on/off). The picture quality is excellent compared to other cameras similar in size. The ease of use is much better than other 4 megapixel point-and-shoot cameras. Many have complained about the flash, but that's almost a non-issue for most snapshots. Most people take snapshots of their friends & family when they are about 5-7 feet away from them. The flash is PLENTY strong for that. If you have a huge group and they're like 10-15 feet away, then the flash will be a problem. But seriously, when's the last time you tried to take a picture of a big group of people forcing you to stand 15 feet away to get everybody in the picture? (2) 4 megapixels with 3x zoom. Having 3 megapixels is the new minimum when it comes to digital cameras. Canon was very generous giving us 4 megapixels in such a small camera. The general rule of thumb for megapixels is: the more the better. Not only will more megapixels allow you to print bigger & better pictures, having more megapixels gives you the flexibility to crop: you can take a small portion of the picture and blow it up to full screen and still get good detail. The SD300 also features 3x zoom. While this is generally not something to get all excited about, the only other SD series camera until now (the SD110) only featured 2x zoom. (3) Size. The SD300 is noticeably smaller than the S410 or the S500, and even smaller than the SD110. The SD300 will fit nicely in your pocket or your purse. Plus the stainless steel finish is so handsome/pretty that you will want to take this with you everywhere. After all, if you don't carry your camera with you, then what's the use of owning a camera? (4) Movie with Sound. With its built-in microphone and speaker, the SD300 can capture and replay movies with sound. The 640x480 resolution is awesome. You can replay on your 19" monitor at full screen and the video will look great. Under the 640x480 mode, you can capture video at 30 frames per second (fps) or 15 fps, and there is no limit per clip as your only limitation is the amount of space you have left on your memory card. Under the 320x480 mode, you have the Fast Frame Rate option giving you 60 fps, up to 60 seconds per clip, which is great for capturing action shots such as your golf swing. While the main function of the camera is to take still pictures, the high quality video feature is so much fun that you will be using this a lot. (5) Battery & External Charger. The battery life is average. You can take about 140 pictures on a full charge with the LCD screen on and about 400 pictures with the LCD screen off. Since Canon includes an external charger with all their SD series cameras, I recommend getting a second battery. This way, one battery can be charging while you are using one battery, so that you will never run out of batteries. Downside. The only downside is the access to manual mode. On the SD110, S410, and the S500, you can switch to the manual mode by turning a knob. On this camera, you need to press function and switch to manual mode using a soft menu. There are few features only available in the manual mode such as turning off AiAF, long shutter, panorama mode, etc. Unless you use those features a lot, this will not be an issue for you. Recommended Accessories. A must-have

Amazon.com Review Canon's PowerShot range of cameras has always been strong, and the PowerShot 400 continues that tradition. The 4 Megapixel Canon PowerShot S400 digital camera is capable of taking still images at 2,272 x 1,704 pixels--enough for a good quality A4 print. Resolutions go down to 640 x 480 for images you might only want to look at digitally. You can also capture video at 320 x 240 and 160 x 120 pixels. The camera is very small indeed--smaller than earlier PowerShot models, and is easily pocket sized. There is what at first might seem a bewildering array of buttons around the casing, but in fact these provide excellent one-button-press access to most of the most used features, such as the 3x optical zoom which goes up to 11x when combined with digital zoom features, the macro mode, settings for the flash and self timer. For more advanced features like changing the shutter speed, which it is great to be able to do on a digital camera; you do need to delve into the LED a little further, though. Images are stored on CompactFlash card--the largest image can be a couple of MB in size so you'll need to think big when it comes to CF card size with this camera. The battery is removable, and a spare to carry in the pocket might be a good idea. Canon supplies a range of desktop software for viewing, editing and making use of your digital images. As with previous PowerShot cameras, one of the tools works with the Stitch Assist mode on the camera itself in the production of panorama shots. Digital cameras get more advanced all the time, but we dare to say that the PowerShot S400 is probably the best pocket sized digital camera we've seen. --Sandra Vogel, Amazon.co.uk The newest Digital Elph in the Canon's PowerShot line, the compact S400--the successor to the popular S200, S230, and S330 models--is both elegant and powerful. It features a 4-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, an improved 3.6x digital zoom, and movie mode for videos of up to three minutes. A stainless steel shell protects the camera, while a new finish--Super Hard Cerabrite--mixes metals and ceramics to produce a tough cool-toned exterior that is visually stunning.Optics and ResolutionFeaturing a 4.0-megapixel CCD sensor, the PowerShot S400 delivers a wide range of detail and color (with images up to 2,272 x 1,704 pixels) and prints beyond 11 by 14 inches. Canon's high-quality 3x optical zoom lens (36-108mm, f/2.8-4.9) allows you to close in on the action, while the 3.6x digital zoom allows for a combined 10.8x zoom letting you capture intimate details that might have been missed with another camera. The PowerShot S400 also features Canon's nine-point AiAF (Artificial intelligence Auto Focus) system for focusing accuracy, shutter speeds of 15 to 1/2,000 second, and fast sequence shooting at a rate of 2.5 frames per second (fps).Movie ModeShoot up to three minutes of MPEG video at resolutions up to 320 x 240 pixels with sound, editing controls, and VCR-like playback. The movies aren't camcorder quality, but they're fun and convenient, and they're perfect as e-mail attachments. The camera can also attach voice memos or sound files of up to 60 seconds to each image.More FeaturesYou can select from evaluative, center-weighted, and spot-metering modes depending on the subject matter, and can even choose to set shutter speeds and apertures manually. An ISO range of 50 to 400 ensures practical shutter speeds in a wide variety of lighting situations, while a multifunctional, built-in flash offers a maximum reach of 3.5 meters in Auto ISO mode.Canon's DIGIC (DIGital Imaging Core) processor ensures excellent color rendition and white balance for every shot, as well as super-fast auto focusing, noise-free imaging, and advanced flash exposure performance. 1.5-inch TFT (transreflective) LCD monitor. Built-in flash with auto, on, off, manual, slow-synch, and red-eye reduction modes. Shot modes include manual, auto, and stitch assist. White balance modes include daylight, cloudy, tungsten, fluorescent, and more. Histogram display for checking exposure and contrast levels in images stored on the memory card. Built-in orientation sensor automatically rotates portrait pictures, and these images remain rotated when downloaded, saving time during in-computer image processing. Storage and Transfer Images and video are stored on CompactFlash memory cards (Type I only) and the included 32 MB card holds approximately 27 images at the Large/Fine setting. Files can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows 98/Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.Printing Canon has introduced a series of printers designed to work directly with its lineup of digital cameras. Using these printers, no computer is required--simply connect the camera to the printer and start printing. Printers include Canon's bubble jet direct printers S830D and S530D, and card photo printer CP-100. Of course, photos from your camera can also be printed on any home computer system with an inkjet printer, sent off for online processing, or simply enjoyed on your computer screen. Power, Size, and Contents The camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery NB-1LH (included). It measures 3.4 by 2.2 by 1.1 inches and weighs 6.5 ounces (without battery). This package includes the PowerShot S400 digital camera, 32 MB CompactFlash card, battery and battery charger (CB-2LS), USB and AV cables, wrist strap, and ArcSoft Camera Suite CD-ROM and USB drivers for Windows and Mac.

By Jim Krupnik I bought the S-400 to upgrade from the S-200 that I have been using since it was made available. I love the S-200, as it is both durable and handy. It has also become a great value with recent price reductions. On the other hand, I wanted to get the most recent tech advances in the smallest package, so the S-400 was the clear choice. Here are my initial impressions, and some of the improvements / differences between the 200 and the 400. First of all, Canon has paid close attention to the nits and picks of users of the earlier cameras in the ELPH line. Aside from the addition of cutting edge developments, there have been subtle changes that greatly increase it's ease of use. This is an incredible camera built into a compressed case. Except for being ever so slightly thicker than the S-200, it is the same cigarette pack size. It has a 4 mega pixel sensor, and it is quick and accurate. Color saturation and contrast are outstanding. The lens is very sharp from edge to edge (I tested at various light levels from macro mode (1.5") to infinity focus, and it consistantly produced remarkably fine images). 8x10 prints are outstanding. Period. At long shutter speeds (up to 15 sec), the sensor is remarkably free from "noise". In fact, it does better than many SLR style digicams in all areas of picture quality. The 3x optical zoom is a welcome addition. Now you can take a proper head an shoulders portrait without invoking the relatively lossy digital zoom, or suffering from the effects of distorted facial features caused by getting too close with a too short lens. When you need it though, the digital zoom offers up to 11x total zoom power, and returns pretty good results as digital zooms go. The 400 retains the special effects lineup of the 200, and they work very well. The tonal range of the black & white option is a real treat. The final result isn't exactly Panatomic X quality, but it is really good, and your darkroom for artistic dodging and burning is contained entirely on your hard drive. The case is still steel, but has a ceramic coating that is supposed to be even more scratch resistant. It is also much "whiter", and offers MUCH better contrast when you read the various control labels. While the contols are similar, they are also marked with larger and bolder lettering. All in all, a big improvrment. The michrophone was moved from the front to the top of the case. I think the front makes more sense, but it works very well on top. Canon also included a tiny (but effective) speaker in the 400. You can now select or create sounds for all camera functions (even a "real" shutter sound), as well as make voice notes for each photo taken if desired. Most sound functions are individualy adjustable for volume, and several sound "themes" are included. Techno-tinkerers might enjoy customizing the photo displayed upon startup. Movie preview also has sound now.On the subject of movies, the 400 makes a little tradeoff. The max resolution is no longer 640x480, it is 320x240 (which is fast becoming standard for movies from still cameras). On the other hand, it is not limited to 10 seconds anymore. You can now make clips up to 3 minutes each. Computer playback looks very good. TV playback isn't bad at all. As a pocket sized way to film Junior taking his first bike ride without training wheels, it can't be beat. The shutter button and zoom ring are a little larger, and now feel just right. The 400 has also incorporated the mode selector wheel used on other high end Canon cameras. This is long overdue, as it makes using all of the many features and modes a real joy. Red eye appears to be better than before, but I don't expect much from such a close coupled flash / lens combo, and who really cares, as it is corrected with a click of the mouse before you print a photo. A few MAJOR improvements are the 9 zone Ai

Most helpful customer reviews 9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. quite a bit too large for the Elph 300 HS By denmonta7 There is nothing really wrong with the item itself although there is not much padding. The problem is that it is sold as a good fit for the Canon ELPH 300 HS. I bought the camera and this case together, but I returned the case because it is too big for the Canon Elph 300. The camera is kind of floating around. The internal dimensions are 4.2 L x 3 W x 1.5 D. The actual camera dimensions are 3.62 x 2.2 x .79. It should not be sold as a case for that particular camera. Instead, I bought the Case Logic UNZT-2 that has more padding and a better fit. Another case that would even be a closer fit would be Case Logic UNZB-2. The return process through Amazon is really quick and easy. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Canon WP-DC29 Waterproof Case for SD1200IS Digital Elph Camera

Wherever the action leads you, whether onto the beach or into the sea, your Canon PowerShot digital camera can come with you – when it's safe inside this Canon Underwater Case. Enjoy the fun and the freedom of being able to take any photo you want, whenever and wherever you want. The WP-DC29 Underwater Case has been specifically designed for the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital Camera and is waterproof down to the depth of 130 ft. (40m). This clear and durable polycarbonate case shields your digital camera as you explore your underwater surroundings. A tight O-ring main seal with safety lock, along with stainless steel and nickel-plated brass hardware, help to ensure protection from corrosion for years to come. A fluorite (FL) glass window gives your digital camera's high quality Canon lens the protection and clear view it needs to deliver crisp detail and vibrant color. A flash diffusion plate allows you to use your camera's internal flash. It would be useless to take pictures underwater if you didn't have the ability to capture the results you wanted. That's why the Canon Digital Underwater Housing gives you full control over your camera. It features a large, responsive shutter button, precision zoom lever, and durable controls to give you access to everything your Canon digital camera has to offer. This waterproof housing is even great above water for skiing, fishing, boating, and more.

Brand: Canon Model: WP-DC29 Dimensions: 3.40" h x 2.70" w x 5.00" l, .65 pounds For small underwater subjects, choose the Macro Mode. The first thing to master with wide-angle shots is keeping the water color blue. Panorama - First, select the Stitch Assist Mode on your PowerShot digital camera. Shoot a series of overlapping images. Follow instructions for maintenance tips to optimize housing performance

I went up to 80 feet underwater and took pictures and made movies. There was no fogging in the lens. I didn't use the diffusion plate it was sunny and bright underwater. The pictures came out good just as if you took them on land. The camera is great with the underwater setting. This is the second waterproof case I got. The first one is for an older camera like 6 years ago. I had issues with it like the fogging. This one didn't and I guess Canon found a way to eliminate that. Here are two tips that I want to share with you other than make sure your battery is fully charged. 1) Set the camera to Underwater setting before you go under. If you want to take a picture above the water, like if you went snorkeling and want to take a picture of the beach from the water, you can easily switch to Auto. Then when you go back underwater, switch back to Underwater (Program). 2) When you make a movie, try to be a motionless body, moving only the camera. I find that while kicking the fins, both at the surface (snorkeling) or underwater (scuba diving) moves the camera too much that the image stabilization doesn't really work well. The more still you are, the better it looks like those underwater films you see on TV. Easier to zoom in and out. The most important tip which I learned the hard way but quickly learned via the display after shooting. You MUST allow the camera to focus first before you shoot when it is in the case. Kinda hard when you see a fish or turtle underwater at the last second that you want to shoot before it swims away. That requires skill to allow a little planning. I also brought it with me when we went to the fair and it was raining outside, I popped the camera in the case and took some fun pictures in the rain. Gotta live a little and have fun. The buttons on the case is easy to use and everything the only thing that is the opposite is the Auto/Program/Movie switch. On the camera you, slide up for Auto and down for Movie. It is the opposite when it is in the case, you slide down for Auto and up for Movie, kinda hard to get it in Program. Just watch the display to see which setting it is on. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Good case for very decent camera By H. Schulze I have had several underwater digital Canons, including G7, S330. I got this SD1200 because wifey also wanted to take pictures while I was messing with my G7 and strobe. Messing, because the G7 camera didn't always take the picture on the first flash, and didn't always fire twice either. No one can use 6x zoom underwater, so the SD1200 with 3x has a shorter "nose" which means a reasonable sized lens cavity, and therefore the internal flash actually works. At 30-60 feet, make sure you are 2-3 feet from your subject, closer is better. In shallower water, depending on the visibility, maybe up to 10 feet. Make sure you have a dessicant pack from a bottle of vitamins, and don't leave the case in the sun at any time, and don't assemble in A/C room: no fog on lenses :) Another reason for the 1200 is the latest Digic IV, lower power, better software, better sensitivity, and who needs much more than 10 Mpix, it's wasted under water. Great cam for above water too, even night shots are good, but not as good as a DSLR. Make sure to try the underwater mode (not aquarium), a bit hard to find, but much better colors (less blue saturation). Having had a lot of mileage on my previous cases, I found the need to replace small pieces, but can't seem to get any from Canon, you have to buy a new shell. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. When the sd200 is in the case, it becomes as thick as an s410 camera (by itself, without a case on). It is pretty stiff so it should protect it from scratches and even mild pressure applied to it. It has a magnetic buckle that snaps into place and snaps off easily. The material feels very good in the hand, and looks very classy. The top flap has a small hole where the wrist strap prong slips through. The back features a belt loop (not a clasp) for you to slide a belt through, or feed it through a strap (ie a messenger bag) although the latter would be a bad idea as the magnetic clasp on the flap isnt very strong, it could unbuckle pretty easily (as it is meant to do). the front of the camera is meant to face the front of the case (and the back faces the belt loop). that gives the lcd screen extra protection. it is the only way the sd200 fits in this case (as the strap pront faces the front). Along the sides, there seems to be a semi rigid insert .. top and bottom. probly plastic or cardboard, under the leather material. this helps prevent the buttons from being depressed, accidentally turning the camera on while in the case. Fantastic case, looks great, feels great, small. Downside ... no pocket for a spare battery. There is a tiny slit of a pocket in the case .. but it seems to be made for a sd case. 64 of 74 people found the following review helpful. It Fits Like a Glove ! Almost Perfect... By K. KIM No Personal Attack is Intended BUT as someone who owns a Red PSC-90 case, I have to point out that Gabriel's review is TOTALLY WRONG !!!! I had actually placed my order with Amazon before reading his review. His review made me worry needlessly. My previous camera was a Canon S410 and now I own a Canon SD200 so I am well aware of their differences in size. All I can say is that his must have been mislabeled or he ordered the wrong bag. It's A CUSTOM FIT - TRUST ME. The case is at least an inch shorter than the one for the Canon "S" series (I had the black leather one). Come on people- this is Canon we're talking about. They're not going to sell you a bag that's not intended for the specific camera(s). Even the silver Canon label is half the size as the ones intended for the Canon S500. Finally, it is made from very high quality grade leather and I wasn't sure about the red (in the picture) but in person, it's very striking. The strap is made from the same grade leather. I like the look of the strap but it's unfortunately a bit too stiff. I have reverted back to the original strap but that's my only minor complaint. Granted, I think more women than men will like the RED but I'm so happy not to have another "boring, black leather camera bag". As far as dimensions, I don't need to measure them - all I know is that it fits perfectly without any wiggle room ANYWHERE. The leather is also nice and rigid and will last for many years to come. If you have the Canon Sd200/300, get this case WITHOUT A MOMENT'S HESITATION (unless you want a bag to carry your extra accessories as well)! And yes, the other reviewer is correct - there's no room for a card (or anything else that matter) but that's exactly what I was looking for. An ultra-compact bag for my ultra-compact camera! 21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Best case to keep your camera ultra-compact By Elton Pinto I bought this along with my SD 450 and I love it. This is only a good case if you have an ultracompact camera (like the ones listed in the product title) and want to KEEP it ultracompact. That's why I got it, and if you don't care about ease of shoving your camera in your pocket, then don't bother with this one. There is obviously no place for anything but the camera, and I don't see an issue with that. If you get a 1GB memory card, that should be all you need. And if you want to keep your camera super

The nice thing about the Canon ELPH series is they easily fit into your pocket, are well built/designed, don't cost a lot, come with a boatload of features, and take great pictures. The SD1300, the latest in the ELPH line continues in that tradition, adding considerable additional sophistication and sacrificing some useful functionality in the interest of cutting cost. It is a small camera and carries with it the baggage that comes with the convenience of having to carry so little baggage. (sorry, couldn't resist) None of the issues raised, given that they comes as part of the convenience trade-off made me consider anything other than the 5-star rating this camera deserves. - Many of the functions are only accessible through menus, sometimes several levels deep. The good new is the Automatic and scene modes are pretty good (as long as you spend a few minutes reviewing what they really do). This camera is not intended to be used in aperture or shutter priority, let alone full manual. - The battery life might be shorter than you expect. That's a trade-off for having a camera that's small and light; you get a battery that is small and light. One thing you can do is get a spare battery. That is good advice for any camera. Another thing that will help is to keep the display off as much as possible. That means using the monitor as little as possible. The "sad" part is that Canon chose to drop the optical viewfinder in this model. That means a camera that is simpler and less expensive to make but will go through batteries quicker because you must use the display when taking picture. - The camera response is a bit slow for effectively capturing children and pets. The trick for doing that is to either have a great sense of timing and a shutter that reacts instantly or a reasonably fast ( > 4x / sec ) burst mode. This camera has neither. Some other suggestions that apply: - Use the lowest ISO available given your requirement for either aperture or shutter speed. To avoid getting technical, higher ISO always introduces higher noise. At issue is when it becomes noticeable. In newer dSLR cameras you can get over 1000, maybe well over depending on the camera, before the noise becomes noticeable. For this camera keeping it at or below 200 is a good idea. - Don't use in-camera sharpening. Digital pictures will almost always benefit from sharpening but you are better off doing it with a photo editing program. Computer-based algorithms tend to be more sophisticated and you can better judge the results on your monitor as opposed to the camera LCD. - If you want more vivid colors and have the choice use sRGB instead of Adobe RGB. While you get fewer colors they are distributed over a wider range. They are also render better on computer monitors, many commercial labs, and any other place your pictures are likely to show up. Finally, I've found the Caselogic QPB-1 Compact Digital Camera Case (Black/Gray) is just the right size for this camera. It's semi-rigid so you get a fair amount of protection but doesn't add a lot of bulk. It's made even better by using one of these, Nite Ize SB1-2PK-01 Size-1 S-Biner, Black, 2-Pack, to secure it to a belt loop. BTW, I feel that honest, effective reviews can take the place of first-hand experiences that are lacking in online shopping. I've always appreciated the help I've received from other reviewers and work hard to return the favor as best as I can. I hope you found this review helpful and if there was anything you thought was lacking or unclear leave a comment and I'll do what I can to fix it. 822 of 870 people found the following review helpful. 1400mAh NB-5L / NB5L Replacement Battery for Canon PowerShot SD700 IS, SD790 IS, SD800 IS, SD850 IS, SD870 IS, SD890 IS, SD900, and SD950 IS - Japanese Cells

This is a 1400mAh high capacity replacement battery. The higher the mAh rating, the more power a battery can store and the longer it will last per charge. It contains premium Japanese grade A battery cells and is guaranteed to outperform the Canon original battery. This battery is CE certified and built to meet or exceed the OEM specification. It is guaranteed to safely power all cameras that use the NB-5L battery. The lithium ion chemistry of this battery makes it 100% memory free. Unlike Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cad) batteries, lithium ion batteries don't have a "memory effect" which shortens their capacity. They can be partially charged and/or discharged without worry of shortened battery life. Are you concerned about protecting the environment? Do you worry about exposing your family to electronics containing hazardous heavy metals (such as lead or mercury)? You can rest easy knowing this battery is manufactured in accordance with the strict RoHS standards, which call for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Unlike most aftermarket power supplies, our batteries have undergone rigorous cell cycle testing before leaving our factory. If a battery does not pass our benchmark testing for superior performance, it will be eliminated from the production line. This guarantees the best possible quality in all our batteries and virtually eliminates the chance of a product being shipped dead on arrival. This battery includes a 3-year warranty. Because we use premium Japanese cells and the highest quality components, we are confident that the battery will last the duration of the warranty and beyond. However, in the rare case where you experience a problem with the battery within the warranty period, it will be replaced promptly. Battery Specs: 3.7V, 1400mAh, Rechargeable Li-Ion; Compatible with the following Canon cameras: PowerShot SD700 IS, SD790 IS, SD800 IS, SD850 IS, SD870 IS, SD890 IS, SD900, SD950 IS.

Buy Canon Batteries Instead By Secret Staten Island I tried to save a few bucks and bought a couple of these generic "Wasabi Power" batteries. Advertised as containing Japanese cells, these batteries are manufactured in China. Despite having an alleged rating of 1400mAh (compared to Canon's 1120mAh) these batteries - fresh out of the charger - only lasted about half the time compared to the original Canon battery. If you need a relatively inexpensive backup battery when you need to squeeze out a few more shots, then you could probably make do with these. However, if you plan on shooting for any appreciable amount of time, I suggest biting the bullet and paying Canon a little more money for the OEM replacement. At least you know it will be reliable. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent battery!! By toddlerPhoto2 I am using this battery with my Canon PowerShot SD990 IS and it is equal to if not better than the Canon OEM battery which would have cost me $58. I have purchased 44 canon Elph Cameras so far and never have less than two batteries with me at all times. I paid about $15.00 here and this allows me to have three on hand for the price of one. I have a car charger and the normal charger and never ruin an event by running out of battery to allow for a great shoot...no limits in power available all day! I also use Amazon to buy the Digital Elf KIT which gives you a genuine CANON battery and the Leather Case and a very nice Metal Neck Strap, for around $48.00. That is a Combination and a price that you cannot beat anywhere! Manufacturer Description Instantly recognizable, the classic "Box & Circle" ELPH design lives on in the PowerShot SD770 IS Digital ELPH. This sleek, slim head-turner is the perfect everyday camera. High-end specifications include 10.0-megapixel resolution and a 3x optical zoom lens. Spectacular images are easy to create thanks to advanced Canon technologies like Face Detection and Motion Detection Technologies that eliminate blur. PowerShot SD770IS Highlights 1x zoom/3x zoom 3x optical zoom and Optical Image Stabilizer The PowerShot SD770 IS Digital ELPH’s 3x optical zoom is a clear winner when it comes to getting up close and personal. And Canon’s invaluable Optical Image Stabilizer reduces the blur of camera movement, even in tricky low light situations. 2.5-inch PureColor LCD II screen for bright, accurate color The PowerShot SD770 IS Digital ELPH gives you a large 2.5-inch LCD screen for excellent control when framing your shots. Canon’s PureColor LCD II offers more spectacular color, resolution and contrast even when viewed at an angle (compared to PureColor LCD). The screen is highly durable and easy to see in any light with a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective coating. It also features Night Display for easy viewing in low light -- a perfect feature for gathering friends and family around to see your images. Motion Detection Technology automatically detects subject movement and optimizes exposure control Life doesn’t stand still for picture-taking. That’s why Canon included its advanced Motion Detection Technology in the PowerShot SD770 IS Digital ELPH. This sophisticated feature works in the background to instantly evaluate how fast your subject is moving. Then it automatically selects and sets the optimal exposure and ISO settings to keep everything looking sharp and clear. When you need higher ISOs for action-stopping shutter speeds, Motion Detection Technology provides it. But when no movement is detected, it allows lower ISOs for excellent color and detail. So whether you’re shooting a bride walking down the aisle, a ballet recital or even a child’s soccer game, you can relax and shoot with confidence knowing you’ve got the picture you intended. With Canon's Face Detection WB (right), skin tones are not affected by overall lighting Improved Face Detection Technology sets the focus, exposure, flash and white balance automatically Canon's powerful Face Detection Technology delivers even better results with the new SD770 IS Digital ELPH. The Face Detection Technology continues to recognize faces in a scene, and concentrate exposure (daylight or flash) and focus upon them. But the SD770 IS Digital ELPH adds more: Face Detection WB means the camera concentrates upon faces when calculating white balance for the best possible skin tones. Face Select and Track lets the SD770 IS Digital ELPH user highlight one face among several in a scene, and the camera concentrates on that person, even as they move around the scene. Face Detection Technology is a powerful contributing factor in Canon's new Motion Detection Technology. DIGIC III Image Processor for superior image quality and improved functionality With DIGIC III, your images boast superior quality, the camera operates at top efficiency and battery life is enhanced. What’s more, DIGIC III enables Canon’s Face Detection Technology and Red-eye Correction to give you better, more true-to-life people shots. Simply press the Shutter Button halfway down, and the camera automatically pinpoints the faces in the scene and chooses the ideal focus point. The camera controls exposure settings and flash to keep every face looking bright and natural. Red-eye Correction can be handled in-camera, in two ways. The entirely new Red-eye Correction during shooting uses the Face Detection Technology to recognize and remove red-eye from flash images as they're taken, before the file is written to the memory card. It's also possible to correct red-eye during image playback, using simple settings in the SD770 IS Digital ELPH's menu. iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC III Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance. Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures. 1) The new Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken. 2) The SD770 IS Digital ELPH can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback. 3) The user can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them. Print/Share Button for easy direct printing and downloading The PowerShot SD770 IS Digital ELPH's Print/Share button makes direct printing easier than ever. Simply connect the SD770 IS Digital ELPH to a Canon PIXMA photo printer or SELPHY compact photo printer or any PictBridge compatible photo printer, press the lighted Print/Share button and print! Also use the Print/Share button to transfer images to a computer (Windows and Macintosh). Print your own ID photos in 28 different sizes or use the Movie Print function to output multiple stills from a recorded movie on a single sheet with a Canon SELPHY compact photo printer.

Astonishing power in a super-compact design By Edward Sawma I previously had a Canon PowerShot S110 digital ELPH from 6 years ago or so, and loved that camera. I didn't realize that there was so much more that a little camera could do! I researched the new Canon's out there (since I loved the ELPH), and decided on the SD770 IS for its compact design and features outlined well by others. This camera just blows me away. It takes amazing pictures in full-auto mode. In situations where full-auto doesn't quite do the job as well as possible, this camera lets you change ISO settings, white balance, focus method, and tons of other factors. Compared to the S110, I thought the ability to change the ISO setting was a big improvement over previous generations. You're actually changing the sensitivity of the sensor in the camera, allowing you to take pictures with more clarity in conditions that have less light. This, coupled with the image stabilization (which again, blows me away on this camera), allows you to not have to use flash, preserve the real look of the scene, and take a crisply clear picture. Battery life is amazing. I haven't charged it once yet... I'm going on over 150 pictures taken now. I've taken many pictures in low light with no flash, which drains the battery faster because the sensors have to stay on longer. The battery low warning has now come on... but I've still taken over 10 pictures on low battery, so it gives you a good amount of warning time. I also thought I didn't need more megapixels, because my pictures from my 2MP S110 looked great. True, 10MP looks even better, but a HUGE benefit is that it automatically improves your ability to do digital zoom and keep the picture looking crisp. You can take a 10MP full resolution photo of a scene, then crop it down later to the zoomed-in part of the scene that you want, and still have a crisp image for a 4x6 print. The camera is also able to do this more automatically... if you choose to take a photo at a lower resolution, like 4MP, and you use digital zoom, the camera will automatically use its sensor to it's full 10MP capability to zoom digitally and retain image quality. Just a fantastic camera. I'm glad I stuck with Canon, and I'm glad I bought the latest generation. 209 of 213 people found the following review helpful. Trying to decide between a Canon SD1100, SD790 and this SD770? By Anjana Nigam If you're trying to decide between these 3 digital elph models SD1100, SD770 and SD790 which fall in a similar price range, here's my take. I have used the SD1100 and SD790 extensively and SD770 is like an in-between hybrid. {The SD790 is actually the 2008 upgrade of 2007s very popular model SD750. The SD1100 is an upgrade of the SD1000. Canon probably felt the need for an in-between model so the SD770 is new, with the layout and screen-size similar to SD1100 but the CCD is larger like the SD790 making it a 10MP camera.} Common new features: - Digic III processor = better picture taking - Face detection - detects multiple faces in a shot and adjusts the flash, white balance so that the faces don't get bleached out and you get less red eye - Motion detection - focuses on subject even if they're moving so your shot is not blurry. - Shooting modes - NEW sunset mode (great results) and the usual portrait, night shot, stitch assist (panoramic), foliage, fireworks, indoor, kids and pets, underwater, aquarium, beach, snow and ALSO Color accent (keep one color and rest of pic is B/W) and Color Swap (Exchange one color with another) Here are the pros and cons of each model: SD1100: Canon PowerShot SD1100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver) Pros: Small size with a nicely contoured look. Cool colors. Viewfinder with 2.5 inch screen. Lowest price. Cons: Less MPs (8MP) and smaller CCD 1/2.5 inch. SD770: (Priced in between SD1100 and SD790) Pros: Smallest in size. 10 MPs.

Motion Detection tracks moving subjects in a much larger range--allowing you to wait for the perfect shot without refocusing. The PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH can even use i-Contrast in playback mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting activated. Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures. 1) Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken. 2) The PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback. 3) You can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them. Life doesn’t give you second chances to capture special times. That’s why the PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH features an ISO 1600 setting that reduces the effects of camera shake and sharpens subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility. ISO can be expanded to 3200 when you select ISO 3200 Special Scene mode. Most helpful customer reviews 1632 of 1661 people found the following review helpful. great little cam, some improvements from earlier powershots, some quirks By Omar Siddique The SD1200 has some big changes over its predecessor SD1100, and is the smallest, best designed Elph I've used thus far. I've owned many models of Elph, this is my 6th or 7th, so my review is aimed especially at other serial Canon owners. I mostly compare the SD1200 to the SD1100. * The big changes: Digic4 and a larger CCD sensor. The slight increase in CCD size (1/2.3" vs 1/2.5") should make for "cleaner" photos. And Digic4 promises faster/cleaner shots also. * You get 10MP vs 8MP on the SD1100, and "medium" (M1) size is now 6MP. JPG quality is down to 2 setting: Fine or Normal. * SD1200 is only slightly smaller than the SD1100, but feels notably smaller by virtue of curved edges and the LCD being flush with the body (no bump-out). * The 1200 now feels as small as this design can shrink. Good news: my average-sized male hands can still comfortably hold it, barely not covering lens, flash, or resting on the LCD. But the round power-button is now almost too small to press if you had big fingers and no fingernails. * 1200's new battery is a higher capacity 1000mAh (vs ~760mAh for SD1100). There's also a new charger (not compatible with the old batteries), a glossy white-colored model to blend into your wall. * The buttons and menus are streamlined. There's now a button for review mode, pressing it a 2nd time takes you back to the previous state. Handy. The slider has dedicated AUTO and Manual settings, no longer need to use menus for that switch. * Continuous mode and ISO now are in the Function Menu (on the SD1100, they had dedicated buttons). * A SD card is no longer included. This makes sense to me, a 32MB card is barely useful, and with the downward pressure on electronics prices, I can't imagine Canon wanting to bundle a more expensive/bigger card. Some people will find this lack annoying. * The A/V output is gone, and the USB connector now serves both purposes (both kinds of included cables now have a USB-end) * A new version of Canon software is required for this model, Zoombrowser 6.3. Canon typically requires a new release for each new family/season of cameras. Unfortunately, the CameraWindow software has been intentionally dumbed-down in the 6.x software and no longer offers the options to delete your photos (have to go through the OS), nor to chose custom naming for the downloads. I say intentionally, since I asked Canon customer-support about it and they stated the changes were not bugs. The last Canon software to still have that functionality was 5.x, corresponding to the SD1000 and other cameras released that season. * In casual indoor tests, the 1200 seemed more ready to go to ISO400 (often too "noisy" to be useful) when the SD1100 would have chosen ISO200. * The SD1200 and SD1100 have identical specs on their optics. However, I noticed a more pronounced barrel-distortion on the 1200 at extreme wide-angle. (still only noticable in close-up shots of straight-edged items at wide-angle) * In a casual speed test, the SD1200 took/stored photos notably faster the SD1100 (same scene, continuous-mode, same brand SD card), despite the 1200's image size being larger. * Canon's paper manuals have been shrinking steadily. With this model, the only manual included is a quick-start guide, the rest is on CD-ROM. * The packaging is even more efficient than before, about half the size of the SD1100's box. * Sadly, there is no HD video mode, although all of the other Elphs released this spring had HD. SD1200 owners are stuck with 640x480 video. Canon has several sub-series within the compact Elph line, varying mostly by asthetics and optics. The SD1200 is successor to the series that included the SD1100, SD1000, and SD600. These all favor a classic, slim design. If you're unfamiliar with Canon's Powershot cameras, there's lots of good material out there on
