Schuch The Canon Selphy CP-510 dye-sublimation printer is the perfect portable photo-printer. For years my wife has rued our migration to digital family pictures which, in her experience, seem inaccessible and unprintable without the divine intervention of her grumbling techno-weenie husband. The "Selphy" (a Japanese cutesification of Canon's "Elph" compact camera line to which it mates nicely) makes family holiday photos fun for everyone: 1. Plug the printer's power supply into a wall outlet (or use the optional rechargeable battery not included). 2. Plug the retractable cable directly into any Pictbridge-enabled camera (no computer necessary). 3. Press the printers POWER button (the only button it has). 4. Use the cameras Pictbridge printing controls to select images and apply cropping. The printer can be connected to a computer (USB cable not included) and ships with printer drivers and an array of excellent image management applications. The CP-510 outputs one 4x6 photo every minute and, instead of messy inks that tend to fade, uses stable, dye polymer pigments impregnated on a ribbon that's loaded into an easy-to-handle cartridge. Each imaging cartridge is purchased with matching photo paper and prints the exact number of sheets included (so you never have to worry about the printer supply equivalent of that dreadful scandal of bun-less hotdogs at the last family picnic). About the size of a cigar box, the CP-510 travels well in a large camera bag I purchased for it and supplies are readily available at most big box outlets. The colors are accurate and stable. Fantastic for Travel By Robert Salita Can't believe I lugged around the toaster sized Epson Picturemate for a year. The CP510 beats the Epson in portability. Both produce good water-resistant (not waterproof) photos. The CP510 power adapter works with 110-220 volts while the Picturemate does not. Update: 19 March 2006 Comparing photos produced by the CP510 and an Epson PictureMate, I didn't find any marked differences except in one photo. I'm baffled by a color error produced by the Epson. Part of a gray striped shirt become bluish; left of seam is gray, right of seam is bluish (wrong). Changing Epson's printer quality options (auto-correct, digital photo) doesn't change a photo's appearance. Canon offers few options. Epson prints one inkjet droplet width at a time (all colors) while the Canon prints an entire a yellow layer then sucks the paper back, prints the red layer sucks back, repeating for a total of 4 passes. This seems like it is a lengthy process but the Canon prints twice as fast as the Epson. Note other models of Epson PictureMate's print faster than mine. All-in-all, for my situation, I prefer the Canon only because of it's travelability; a much smaller size and 110-240 volt power range. Neither one seems clearly superior in photo quality, printer price, features or per-print cost. An important difference is that the Epson has the advantage of being a self contained unit whereas the Canon has various loose parts that must accompany the printer. Bjork I got this case AND extra battery for my SD990 IS for the same price as the case only($19.99). This is the OEM Canon leather case and the battery is an aftermarket Li-on NB-5L. The battery works flawlessly and its sooo nice to have an extra charged battery for camping and travel, especially since I shoot videos often. I read other reveiws that the case is a little snug. This is true; however, Work it in a bit like a baseball glove or a new pair of shoes and its perfect. Its new and stiff leather, it's designed to protect. It fits right out of the box but a little stiff, but thats OK. Use some leather conditioner, leather oil or leather cleaner and rub and bend and fold and mold it and it will slide in and out of the supple case like a pistol from a custom holster. If you own a SD 700,790,800,850,870,880,890,900,950,970,990, get this custom case. You do not want your new camera slamming around inside a loose-fitting case, rather have it held firm in the right, velvet-lined case that was made for this instrument. Plus the case minimizes the overall size and bulk of the camera. The cases closes with magnetic snaps and holds firmly and protects. The camera will not slide out of the case if you take a fall and forget to snap it down. That is nice if you bike, or climb. If you spent $200+ for the camera, don't fall short on the case. You will be glad you got it. I have no idea why you might use the neck-stap that is included, but great deal anyway. All this AND an extra battery too! WOW. Must be a mistake... Ching The battery alone is approx 40-45 online, including amazon (which has free shipping/no tax -- which helps people in states like california). The case alone is 20 on amazon. This set is 50 bux without tax or shipping ... a great deal if you were planning to buy both. If you weren't ... the case is a bonus! The battery is pretty straight forward. Anyone who has a SD200 or SD300 camera knows what the battery does and what the battery life is. Less is known about the case and the strap. The neck strap is pretty gaudy in my opinion. It isnt something I would use, but some might find it handy. I also think having a camera around your neck may cause your camera to get damaged (zippers, necklaces etc.. may scratch up the camera, swinging it around your neck may cause it to hit some hard and unforgiving surface) The leather case is a gem. It has some short comings but it's pretty close to perfection for my needs. This case fits the SD200 very well. When the sd200 is in the case, it becomes as thick as an s410 camera (by itself, without a case on). It is pretty stiff so it should protect it from scratches and even mild pressure applied to it. It has a magnetic buckle that snaps into place and snaps off easily. The material feels very good in the hand, and looks very classy. The top flap has a small hole where the wrist strap prong slips through. The back features a belt loop (not a clasp) for you to slide a belt through, or feed it through a strap (ie a messenger bag) although the latter would be a bad idea as the magnetic clasp on the flap isnt very strong, it could unbuckle pretty easily (as it is meant to do). the front of the camera is meant to face the front of the case (and the back faces the belt loop). that gives the lcd screen extra protection. it is the only way the sd200 fits in this case (as the strap pront faces the front). Along the sides, there seems to be a semi rigid insert .. top and bottom. probly plastic or cardboard, under the leather material. this helps prevent the buttons from being depressed, accidentally turning the camera on while in the case. Fantastic case, looks great, feels great, small. Downside ... no pocket for a spare battery. There is a tiny slit of a pocket in the case .. but it seems to be made for a spare SD card. 57 of 62 people found the following review helpful. Not a great deal By J. Stinson I got this for $49.99 (right before the price went up). At the time, it was like paying for a battery, which I needed, and then getting the case and strap for $5.00. What the heck, I gave it a try. At the current price, I wouldn't recommend this. The case is a tight fit, and has a rough fabric lining. I'm already having problems with brassing on the metal and scratching of the LCD screen (I did later cover the screen with a stick-on Palm Pilot protector. That helped.) I put the camera in the case once, and decided that it would only contribute to wear as I put it in and pull it out. I'm much happier with a generic $10 case I found in a photo store. The strap, well, I doubt I'd use that, since the camera is too fragile to hang from your neck.
